South African authorities arrest four men accused of eating human flesh
South African authorities arrested four men accused of eating human flesh in KwaZulu-Natal province.
BBC news agency reports that the four accused cannibals appeared in court on Monday in Estcourt to face charges of murder and conspiracy for allegedly raping, killing, mutilating and then eating the body of a woman.
One of them is reported to have walked into a police station while holding human body parts – including a leg and a hand – and announced that he was ‘tired of eating human flesh’.
According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, one of the men was a nyanga – a type of traditional healer.
BBC also reports a spokesperson to say that there are possibilities that the fourm men – aged between 22 and 32 – are part of a bigger syndicate.
Police are carrying out investigations on the matter, urging people whose relatives have disappeared in the vicinity of Estcourt to come forward.
A month ago, in Durban, the biggest city in the region, a man was arrested in possession of a human head, concealed in a backpack. It is believed he was trying to sell it to a traditional healer.
