South Africa: Xenophobic riots spread to nine provinces

Read < 1 minute

Xenophobic riots in South Africa have now spread to all nine provinces in the country.

The violence eased in areas around the southern port city of Durban on Friday – due to the work of police, civic and religious organisations.

However, tensions increased on Friday night in Alexandra Township in Johannesburg as residents blockaded roads with rocks, burning tyres and taunting police officers.

Police retaliated by firing rubber bullets at looters and residents. At least six foreign nationals are thought to have been killed in the series of attacks.

There are now more than 800 police officers patrolling nationwide.
