South Africa to roll out at least 600,000 COVID-19 tests
At least 600,000 South Africans will be tested for coronavirus in the coming weeks, Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize said during an interview with a local tv station, eNCA.
During the interview, the health minister said that the department is waiting for more test kits to be delivered.
“As we speak now, we can do more than 400, 000 tests. The new order will enable us to do 400 000 tests. We already had in the system about 120,000 from the government in addition to 80,000 from the private sector. So that gives us around 600, 000 tests and we are still ordering more”, said Mkhize.
So far, more than 80, 000 tests have been conducted in the country.
Mkhize said there has been an increase in tests conducted at public laboratories.
The number of confirmed cases has risen to 2,173 and 25 people have died from COVID-19.
