South Africa Government Provides Decent Housing in Townships
The South African Government issued keys to the newly completed 14 housing units in the township of Langa near Cape Town to new home – owners and tenants.
The ANC led government initiated the N2 Gateway project in 2004 to provide decent low income homes for people who have never rented or owned houses before. The people of Langa has previously lived in tin shacks.
Speaking at the launch of the completed first phase of the project President Jacob Zuma said his government’s efforts to ensure South Africans have a better life have paid off. He added that the democratic government is confident that it has lived up to its Freedom Charter’s promise of providing shelter, security and comfort for the public.
Phase two of the N2 Gateway will see over six thousand units built in the coming four years. Housing Projects are under construction across the county to overcome the national housing backlog and clear out informal settlements in South Africa.
