Somalia has reopened its embassy in America after a 24-year shutdown.

Somali-Americans are quite excited about the reopening of the embassy, saying that it is not just a diplomatic formality, but represents new hope for the country’s transformation after years of turmoil.

The relationship between the US and Somalia has been on a steady improvement since August 2012 when Somalia ended the so-called transition period and elected new leaders.

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who took office in 2012 has held a number of meetings with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

US President Barack Obama nominated the first ambassador to Somalia in February this year, a move that proved the improving relations between the two countries.
