Somalia descent wins Member of Parliament seat in Canada

Canada has elected it first Member of Parliament that is of Somali decent. Ahmed Hussein who migrated into the country in 1993 and is now a Canadian citizen won the seat with a strong lead.

Ahmed Hussein with the Liberal Party won the York South-Weston seat for the Liberals against the New Democratic Party candidate Mike Sullivan who was holding the seat since being elected in 2011.

“We feel like finally, after 25 years, we are Canadian,” said supporter Abokar Hassan, who is from Somalia.

Ahmed Hussein is a criminal defence lawyer and president of the Canadian Somali Congress. He was elected by over 100,000 residents of the area who are said to be renters and new comers to Canada.
