Senegalese forward Sadio Mane scored twice as defending Premier League champions Liverpool defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in London on Sunday.

The first half, which Liverpool dominated, ended goalless but Chelsea went into the break a man down after defender Andreas Christensen was sent off in added time for a foul on Mane as he raced through on goal.

Liverpool began the second half strongly and eventually made the breakthrough when Mane headed in Roberto Firmino’s right-wing cross.

Mane then doubled the lead he charged down an attempted clearance by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and fired the ball into an empty net.

Chelsea were handed a lifeline after Liverpool’s new signing Thiago Alcantara was judged to have fouled Timo Werner in the penalty area.

However, Chelsea’s regular spot-kick taker Jorginho saw his effort saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson in the 75th minute.

The game would end 2-0 and see Liverpool make it to wins out of two and climb to third in the table, behind Everton and Arsenal. Chelsea, meanwhile, lies in 10th with three points from two games.
