Rwanda has added its voice to worldwide condemnation to U.S. President Donald Trump’s alleged “shithole” remarks on Friday.
The East African country’s foreign minister Louise Mushikiwabo said the alleged comment was deeply regrettable and demeaning.
“If those comments were made it is deeply regrettable. There are certain realities regarding Africa that Africa has to come to terms with. We on the continent must do certain things to bring back the dignity of the people on the continent and accept our worth, and so comments such as those, I’m not sure if they were uttered, but if it is of course for the continent it is demeaning and unnecessary,” she said in Kigali.
African nations’ representatives at the United Nations unanimously demanded that Trump retracts and apologizes for his alleged remarks.
In a statement, the ambassadors said they were extremely appalled at, and strongly condemned the outrageous, racist and xenophobic remarks by the US president.
Trump’s alleged statement angered many Africans and blacks worldwide, most of whom accused Trump of being racist.
The president however denied using such language, only admitting that his language was ‘tough’.
“The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made – a big setback for DACA!” he said.
