Ramadan 2017: Turkish Muslims prepare for religious period
The Islamic holy month of Ramadan has just begun, and one-point-eight billion Muslims around the world are marking the month with prayer, fasting and charity. This includes many people in Turkey – a country which has taken in thousands of displaced Syrians.
The holy month of Ramadan is of course very important for the millions of Syrian refugees. Their number is over 3 million at this point and the Turkish government does not have any specific celebration plans for the refugees.
But they are aiming to distribute food to those in need, and some camps in the country will also distribute food to the refugees.
Turkey is especially sending some extra aid to several countries during Ramadan – these include South Sudan, Yemen and Somalia.
The President of the Red Crescent has stated that Turkey is set to deliver 15,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Somalia. They are facing famine due to drought in Somalia, where 11 regions of the country have been hit by drought, in some parts severe, and this has led to famine. Because of this, Turkey will send humanitarian aid to Somalia specifically.
