Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has been crowned the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, adding to his PFA Young Player of the Year award.

The Englishman defeated Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk in the voting, with fellow Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero coming in third.

Sterling has so far scored 10 goals and assisted 10, and could add to that tally as the Premier League still has two rounds of gams to go.

The 24-year-old’s contribution has been vital in Manchester City’s quest to defend the Premier League title, in a race that has narrowed down to a battle against Liverpool.

Manchester City lead the race with 92 points, one ahead of Liverpool.

“In such a close title race, there is no surprise that two of the main protagonists are from Liverpool and Manchester City, but it is Raheem Sterling that is the resounding victor, winning by more than 100 votes – 62 per cent of the votes went to Sterling,” Sky Sports quotes Carrie Brown, chair of the FWA.

Sterling has also been very vocal in the fight against racism in football. He has taken center stage in calling for tougher punishments against protagonists of the vice.

Brown also praised this side of the Manchester City player.

“Sterling talked this week about looking to Steven Gerrard for leadership, to set an example, but we believe he has set an example not just for his generations, but for generations ahead of him and before him.”

Sterling’s Manchester City will play Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion in the last two matches, while Liverpool will play Newcastle and Wolves.
