An earthquake measuring 5.8 magnitude struck 60 kilometres northwest the Mozambique city of BEIRA, the United States Geological Survey said on Saturday.
The USGS put the depth of the tremor at 10 kilometres. There were no other details immediately available – according to Reuters.
The country’s current “Earthquake Hazard Level” is set to “Medium”, on ThinkHazard.org.
Mozambique’s last major earthquake was in 2006, causing four deaths, and 36 injuries. Striking at night, to a magnitude of 7.0 on the moment magnitude scale, the epicentre was near Machaze in Manica Province – southern Mozambique.
It is recorded as the largest historical earthquake in Mozambique and the first earthquake in southern Africa to have an identified surface rupture. However, little damage was recorded, with only 294 buildings reported as damaged in the affected area.
