Pressing challenges lie ahead of Buhari’s tenure
President Muhammadu Buhari has just completed over three months in office as the first opposition leader to win Nigeria’s presidential election. He inherited an economy that was grinding to a halt, Bokoharam insurgency dilapidated public infrastructure and rampant youth unemployment.
Just three months ago when Muhamadu Buhari was announced winner of the presidential polls, there was a lot of jubilation across Nigeria.
Subsequently sworn in to office in at the end off May, those who voted him in office looked at him as the man with a magic bullet to most of Nigeria’s problems. But Buhari assumed office when Nigeria’s economy was threatened with a shut down.
Africa’s biggest oil producer could not find enough fuel for itself. Motorists cued for hours, and the Aviation industries nearly grounded to a halt. Most institutions were faced with shutting down due lack of electricity or lack of fuel to power their engines.
In his first 100 days, the president seems to have addressed many of these problems – but much bigger challenges still lie ahead.
