South Sudan’s government has announced that President Salva Kiir will not travel to Addis Ababa for final days of the peace talks.
The talks which are scheduled to end on Monday aim at ending 20 months of civil war. The government’s entire negotiating team has been recalled according to officials. Kiir’s government claims the opposition, led by Riek Machar is divided.
A group of military commanders split from Machar’s group and announced that they no longer recognized him as their leader. President Kiir will only return to the negotiating table once he can establish who he will be negotiating with.
South Sudan’s Minister for Information has officially said that talks have not been suspended saying instead Kiir may not attend the meeting today because his invitation was sent to Juba late and the president did not have sufficient time to travel.
