Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika has pledged to rid the country of corruption as he begins his second term in office.

The 78-year-old made the promise at his inauguration on Friday in Blantyre, following his victory in the May 21 presidential polls.

Mutharika warned that he would not spare anyone found guilty of abusing their positions, saying no one was above the law.

“The honeymoon is over. If you belong to the DPP (Democratic Progressive Party), you have no right to think that you are above the law or to be defiant to your superiors in the name of the party”, he said during the inauguration held at the Kamuzu stadium.

“We will count it as indiscipline and we will fire you.”

Mutharika garnered 38.57% of the votes cast to emerge winner, with opposition party leader Lazarus Chakwera managing 35.41% and Deputy President Saulos Chilima claiming 20.24% in the final tally.

“We want a corrupt-free Malawi where our public resources continue to build roads, community technical colleges and buy drugs for the people,” the president said in his speech.

He also said his government would root for a law that will ensure that 60 percent of government procurement goes to local companies.
