Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday condemned clashes in the western Taraba state that left scores dead.
The clashes between Jukun and Tiv ethnic groups occurred on Friday, and also left tens of people injured.
Other clashes also occurred in Adamawa state, prompting President Buhari’s condemnation.
The cause of the clashes has not yet been established.
“The recent violent clashes between Jukuns and Tivs in Taraba State, and the Fulani, Genjon and Bachama in Adamawa State are needless and saddening. Violence cannot be the solution to the resolution of misunderstandings among people,” he said.
The president said the military had restored calm in the affected areas, and emergency services had been deployed to offer assistance to those affected.
He also urged the affected communities to search for other solutions to their differences other than engaging in war.
“The primary initiative for ending violence once and for all must originate from the local actors involved in these clashes,” he said.
