The delayed Tokyo Olympics will be held next year between July 23 and August 8, the Tokyo Olympic Committee announced on Friday.

The games were initially scheduled to take begin on 24 July. But were postponed for one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has now infected 13.8 million people globally and killed over 590,000.

Earlier this week, IOC president Thomas Bach said there were “all different countermeasures” but hoped spectators would be allowed.

He said an Olympics behind closed doors “is clearly something we don’t want.”

Sports across the world were interrupted by the pandemic, with some competitions later being called off while others were suspended.

Many countries have since allowed a resumption of sporting competitions, but largely without fans in attendance, in a bid to curb any second waves of the disease.

Meanwhile, the Youth Olympics in Senegal scheduled for 2022, have been put back to 2026.
