Kenya tourism board has flagged off an event that showcases the country’s diverse tourism products in Northern part of Kenya,Samburu County.

The event which is at its 29th edition, is known as the Maralal International Camel Derby provides an opportunity for Kenya to showcase its diverse tourism product that spans beyond the safari and beach offering

Organized  annually the event promotes the endowment of Samburu County in different aspects of tourism  such as unique wildlife located in northern Kenya, sports, scenic and cultural tourism as well as natural resource conservation.

While officiating the event, Deputy President William Ruto noted that this cultural fete of the Samburu community was a major tourist attraction that could earn the country millions in revenue if fully supported by private and government partners.

‘’The Maralal International Camel Derby is an opportunity for Kenya to showcase its diverse offerings, including sport, scenic, economic and cultural tourism. The annual race attracts local and international participants and is a rewarding immersion experience ‘’,Ruto said

Samburu prides itself in development of in sports, wildlife and cultural artifacts which remain largely untapped.

This year’s event is offering a rich menu of activities ranging from: camel racing, cycling, anti-poaching campaign run, cultural exhibitions, and entertainment among other performances.

Among the sporting events that are  featuring in the 2018 Maralal International Camel Derby include camel races (10 km amateur, 5 km camel race amateur, 21 km professional camel race, 10 km inter-counties camel race), 10 km anti-poaching race, 21 km professional anti-poaching race, disabled persons race, 21 km mamba bike race, 21 km professional bike, 21 km mamba bike race, 21 km professional bike race, kids’ bike race (boys & girls), and triathlon individual and team events.

According to tourism data from the government, Kenya earned $1.2 billion in last year, which was a 20 per cent growth compared to last year’s revenue of $989 million, and the derby has contributed to this soaring numbers.

International participants have drawn from different countries such as the United Kingdom, South Africa, Germany, USA, France, China, Tanzania, and Ghana. The final race will be held on 2nd September where winners are expected to be awarded with the cabinet secretary of tourism Najib Balala
