First lady judge
Nigerian judge, Justice Daisy Wotube Okocha made history after being sworn in as the first woman Chief Judge in one of the 36 states of Nigeria.
Justice Okocha becomes the first woman to hold the position in the Rivers State following months of being in acting capacity since June of 2015 after a controversy broke out when she was nominated for the position. Okocha was nominated by the National Judicial Council (NJC) after the then governor Rotimi Amaechi, presented another candidate for the position, which led to months of disagreement.
The New River State governor Wike stated that the government was acting in line with recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC) which was confirmed by the Court of Appeal on December 23, 2015. The Governor stated that  swearing of the Chief Judge of the state was a victory for the rule of law and the respect for the rules of succession as outlined by the National Judicial Council, NJC.
“This is a solemn moment for me. The NJC recommendation of 22nd July, 2013 came to manifestation on Monday, 4th January, 2016. God has glorified himself in my elevation as Chief Judge.” said Justice Okocha during her remarks after being sworn in
