The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Nigeria rose to 1,182 after 87 new cases were reported, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said late on Saturday.

Majority of the new cases were reported in Lagos State (33) representing about 38 percent followed by Borno State (18) representing about 21 percent and Osun State (12) representing about 14 percent.

The other cases were reported in Katsina (9), Kano and Ekiti (4), Edo and Bauchi (3) and Imo (1) States.

Lagos State accounts for more than half of Nigeria’s total confirmed cases with 689, which represents 58 percent of the total. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is second with 138 followed by Kano (77), Ogun (35) and Osun (32) States. 28 of Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT have reported at least one COVID-19 case.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has also reported 222 recoveries and 35 deaths from the virus, according to the NCDC.

The NCDC further cautioned Nigerians against consuming bleach and disinfectants to treat the coronavirus and instead should be used to clean surfaces.

“Drinking bleach and disinfectants can lead to health complications and even death,” the NCDC tweeted.

Three of Nigeria’s regions, Lagos and Ogun States and the Federal Capital Territory, are currently under a lockdown order which was initially imposed on March 30 and extended by a further 14 days on April 13.

According to the NCDC, a large proportion of new infections were now occurring in Nigeria’s communities, through person-to-person contacts.
