Nigerians divided on ruling on instant divorce for Muslims
In India, a court ruling banning instant divorce among Muslim couples continues to generate debate.
The court maintains that the practice is un-Islamic and unconstitutional.
In Nigeria, that particular ruling has elicited mixed reactions and is drawing a lot of debate.
The West African country with population of 180 million people is divided almost equally between Christians and Muslims.
In India men have been saying Talaq times to instantly divorce their wives, while a woman has to seek permission from her husband or a cleric to ask for divorce. The practice was criticized for violating the fundamental right of women to equality.
In Nigeria, there is reversible divorce and irreversible divorce. If a woman has received divorce three times, it’s irreversible. If it is once or twice, it is reversible, basically pegged on the note that Islam itself does not really encourage a Muslim to divorce his wife out rightly”
Tripple Talaq has already been banned in countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh. For India’s case, it remains suspended for 6 months until legislation is passed.
