Nigerian student attacked in Hyderabad: Accused arrested
Two days after African envoys boycott ‘Africa Day’ in India over the murder of the Congolese national, Masonda Ketada Oliver, came another brutal attack on a 23-year old Nigerian student in Hyderabad, reports The Times Of India.
Sub-inspector K Krishnaiah of Banjara Hills — the area where the incident took place — said that Ghazeem would park his car in Ghaffoor’s parking lot, instead of the parking space that had been allotted to him.The report further says that the Nigerian national Ghazeem got into an argument over parking with a local called Mohammed Ghafoor.
The student was then hit by an iron rod as they argued. The third year student, of Nizam College is reported to have suffered minor injuries and a case has been filed against Mohd. Gaffoor.
A case has been registered under Section 324 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Hyderabad Police have arrested the accused.
Anjani Kumar of Hyderabad Police said that they had arrested the accused stating that it a case of car parking misunderstanding, not a racial crime
Following last week’s killing of an African student in Delhi, a group of African embassies had said they did not want to participate in Africa Day celebrations on Thursday because of repeated attacks on African students in India
While this instance now becomes the third in a spate of racial attacks carried out against African nationals in the nation, in the past few months, Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh on Thursday refused to call the most recent attack on Congolese student in Delhi, a case of racial attack.
Hyderabad police officer K Srinivas told BBC Hindi’s Imran Qureshi that the two men had “reached some understanding” after Mr Gafoor was arrested and released on bail.
Gideon Omodowale of the local Nigerian Students Association said it was a “small issue”.
