Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been awarded the honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters at the University of Edinburgh. The Nigerian female writer is worldwide known as the winner of MacArthur Genius Grant in 2008, This is Africa reports.
Ms Adichie’s achievement has recognized her as an author and public intellectual. Her award was presented by Professor Sir timothy O’Shea, the University’s Principal and Vice Chancellor.
“It is lovely to be in this place, which is hallowed. I feel very fortunate to be included among the people who have been honored with a degree from this University.” Adichie says while giving a speech at the ceremony.
Dr Barbara Bompani, Director of the Centre of African Studies said Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s work has great influence on the lives, thoughts and creativity of others.
She further said that her works inspires all to understand themselves better.
As a higher doctorate of academic degree, Doctor of Letters in Britain is usually given to those who have distinguished themselves in humanities, government, literature or religion.
