Nigeria summons Indian ambassador over attacks on it citizens
Nigeria has summoned the Indian ambassador to Abuja on Wednesday following the recent spate of attacks on Nigerian students studying in India, the country’s state news agency reported.
Disturbing images and videos appeared this week showing crowds of Indian people attacking Nigerian nationals with objects including metal chairs and trash cans. Those attacked included two brothers who were seriously injured and were admitted into hospital.
The attacks are said on have been ignited by the death of an Indian student, who the locals said had died of drug overdose.
Tests however showed that the dead student didn’t die of any drug overdose as thought by the Indians.
Indian police said they had arrested five men in connection with the attacks on the Nigerian students.
India should ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of those behind the attacks, permanent secretary at the ministry of foreign affairs, Olushola Enikanolaiye, said after meeting Nagabushana Reddy – the Indian ambassador.
“We want to see diligent prosecution so that it would serve as a deterrent to those who think they can take laws into their hands and harass students who are going about their studies.” he said.
Apart from the Nigerian students, a Kenyan lady was also dragged out of a taxi by a mob and beaten by a mob in the satellite city on Wednesday.
The Indian police also said several people involved in the attacks had been identified in video clips of the attacks.
