Nigeria confirms at least three cases of Monkey pox

Nigerian health authorities have confirmed at least three cases of the viral infection monkey pox, with at least 30 more suspected cases across eight states.

Since the first reported case of monkey pox surfaced last month, at least more 41 people have been quarantined.

The virus which consists of high fevers and rash or raised bumps on the face hands and feet is endemic in West Africa.

According to the health officials who describe the virus as self- limiting with no known cure, this particular strain is not deadly.

Samples have been sent to the World Health Organization (WHO) laboratory in Dakar Senegal for tests.

Health officials from the Center for Disease control says efforts are being made to trace persons who may have come in contact with the infected population.

They are urging the public to remain calm while a country wide campaign kicks off warning the against the virus, which is known to be transferred from rodents to humans.

The use of standard infection control measures like hand washing and hygiene are also being encouraged.
