The 2018 Africa Tech Challenge – now in its fifth season – kicked off on Tuesday in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
Hosted under the Ministry of Education in Kenya in partnership with AVIC Internationa, the competition works with various educational institutions in Africa to increase and develop professional skills.
The skill-based initiative began as a result of identifying the skills gap in most African states’ education sector.
The competition focuses on youth empowerment as a means to drive the industrial revolution in Africa
27 teams are participating in this year’s event, aiming for the top prize, manufacturing contracts worth $100,000, awarded to the top two teams.
This year’s competition attracted participants from technical institutions in Ghana, Zambia, Cote d’Ivoire and Gabon.
Three individuals who are voted “most outstanding participant” will each earn scholarships to study in China to gain more knowledge and technical expertise.
