Mozambican President Chapo meets former candidate Mondlane to discuss national stability
Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo and former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane took a significant step toward national reconciliation, discussing political stability and dialogue following months of post-election tensions.
Mondlane, who contested the presidency in the October 2024 election, stressed the need to end violence and promote national cohesion.
“We will end all violence … all types of persecution, from both sides, we agreed it has to stop … we have to stop the destruction of public and private property … and give the country a chance to stabilize,” Mondlane said in a live video on social media.
Since the election, demonstrations and clashes between protesters and security forces have resulted in casualties. The government reiterated its dedication to upholding peace and security while ensuring that political dialogue remains open.
Mondlane stated that President Chapo agreed to provide “social and psychological assistance” to victims’ families and establish “legal conditions” for the release of detained protesters.
The ongoing dialogue is expected to contribute to a more inclusive political environment, with discussions on governance reforms and measures to strengthen democracy in the country.
