Although she moved away from Western New York years ago, Nancie Atwell has said in interviews that it was those first couple of years teaching in the Buffalo area in the US that cemented her love of teaching.
An English teacher who now lives and teaches in Maine, Atwell won the $1 million Global Teacher Prize in Dubai earlier this month after 42 years of work teaching literature.
Atwell plans to donate the full amount to the Center for Teaching and Learning which she founded in 1990.
