MADE IN AFRICA: Revitalizing Madagascar’s vanilla

Madagascar produces nearly 80 percent of the world’s commercial vanilla. The price for first-grade extraction of vanilla beans from the island hit $600 per kilogram in 2018.

This increase is due to a number of factors, including vanilla bean theft and extreme weather changes.

We traveled to Madagascar’s Sava region and met farmers looking at an innovative way to grow the vanilla orchid as well as improve its quality as demand for the natural flavor increases. TAKE A LOOK.
