Read < 1 minute

A Ugandan local start-up, Eco Smart Pads is on a mission to keep girls in school by making affordable sanitary towels. The pads are made from sugarcane by-products.

A UNESCO report indicates that one in 10 girls in Sub-Saharan Africa skips school during their period, missing about 20% of the school year.

Eco Smart has recently won a 10,000 US dollars UN grant, and is collecting feedback to improve its products.

According to the UN children’s agency, UNICEF, keeping girls in school is one of the most effective strategies to combat child marriage. Research shows that when girls remain in school, there are six times less likely to marry young.
