Liverpool’s Cameroonian defender Joel Matip out for up to six weeks
Liverpool’s Cameroonian defender Joel Matip faces a spell of up to six weeks on the sidelines after he sustained an injury in the Reds Champions League win against Italian side Napoli on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old becomes the latest in a worrying list of injuries for Liverpool, who remain unbeaten so far in the Premier League, and are top of the table.
Matip suffered a fractured collarbone on Tuesday when he landed awkwardly following an aerial challenge in the closing seconds of the game, and is set to undergo surgery.
“Matip was taken to hospital following the fixture and further assessment deemed an operation is required.
“Early indications suggest the centre-back is facing a spell of of up to six weeks out of action, though that is dependent on how Matip responds to his treatment and rehabilitation programmes,” a statement from Liverpool read in part.
Other Liverpool players who are currently on the sidelines due to injury include Joe Gomez and Nathaniel Clyne. Trent Alexander-Arnold also came off in Tuesday’s win over Napoli, which ensured the Kop secured their spot in the Champions League Round of 16 at the expense of their visitors.
