Liverpool beat Chelsea 5-4 on penalties on Wednesday to clinch the UEFA Super Cup after the game ended 2-2 after extra time.

The UEFA Super Cup pits the winners of the UEFA Champions League against the winners of the UEFA Europa League.

Chelsea took the lead after 36 minutes when Olivier Giroud latched onto Christian Pulisic’s through ball to slot past Adrian in the Liverpool goal.

Liverpool equalised two minutes after halftime when Roberto Firmino flicked the ball to Sadio Mane who tapped in from close range at the second attempt after Kepa Arrizabalaga kept out his initial effort.

Chelsea thought they had retaken the lead on 81 minutes but Mason Mount’s goal was ruled out for offside.

Mane gave Liverpool the lead in the fifth minute of extra time when he side-footed home a cross from the left by Firmino.

Chelsea levelled the game six minutes later through Jorginho’s penalty after Adrian was judged by referee Stephanie Frappart to have fouled Tammy Abraham in the penalty box.

Liverpool scored all their penalties in the shootout but Abraham had Chelsea’s fifth spot-kick saved by Adrian’s legs.

The win saw Liverpool claim their first Super Cup since 2005 and their fourth title overall. Only AC Milan and Barcelona (both 5 times) have won the Super Cup more times than Liverpool.
