Lightning kills 9 in Mozambican church

At least nine people have died and five others injured after after a lightning strike in Chire, in the Morrumbala district, in central Mozambique.

The victims were inside a church during a religious mass on Sunday.

The injured are being assisted, the District Administrator Pedro Sapange said.

According to an official of Mozambique’s relief agency, the National Disaster Management Institute in Niassa province, Friday Taibo, the phenomenon also left 14 people injured.

Lightning strikes, accompanied by heavy rains and thunderstorms, have been killed several people in many parts of Mozambique since the rainy season began last October.
