Libya has reopened Tripoli’s only functioning airport, the airport authorities’ announced on their Facebook page on Sunday.
Mitiga airport was closed earlier in the day when residents reported an air strike on the Libyan capital.
“The civilian aviation authority closed the air space of the airport until further notice for the sake of air security,” Mitiga airport said on its website, adding that the airport had not been hit.
Explosions, believed to be caused by aerial bombing, were reported early Sunday across Tripoli’s southern districts.
The air strikes are seen to be an escalation of a two-week offensive by eastern forces led by General Khalifa Haftar on the capital city held by the internationally-recognised government.
Haftar’s Libyan National Army started an offensive two weeks ago but has been unable to breach the government’s southern defences.
According to the United Nations, the fighting has killed at least 205 people and wounded over 900 others.
