Koffi Olomide says to perform in Kenya for first time since deportation
Congolese rhumba maestro Koffi Olomide has announced that he will be visiting Kenya later this month for the first time since he was deported for assault.
In a video posted on social media, Koffi revealed that he would be performing in Kenya on 24 April at a governor’s conference in the Western town of Kakamega.
The 61-year-old was in July 2016 caught on camera assaulting one of his dancers just after landing in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, ahead of a concert he was scheduled to perform in.
The victim was reported to have been arguing with Koffi’s wife, who also accompanied him to on the trip.
Following the incident, the musician was arrested by Kenyan authorities and deported back to Kinshasa where he was also reportedly arrested.
After news of the attack went viral, South African and Zambian event organizers also moved swiftly to cancel various shows that Koffi was to grace.
In his short video, Koffi tells his fans “I miss you so much, I love you.”
Local Citizen Television however reports a spokesperson from the country’s Interior Ministry to say the Congolese musician was still unwelcome in Kenya until he applied for revocation of his status as an unwanted person.
