Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday commissioned a 27-kilometer Nairobi Expressway which will connect the country’s main airport to Westlands.
The road which is expected to ease traffic congestion in the Kenyan capital is funded by the China Road and Bridge Corporation at a cost of $599 million.
It is designed to run alongside an already existing highway and will have 15 Kilometers on the ground with the rest of it elevated.
Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Wu Peng was on site to witness the unveiling of the plaque to mark the beginning of the construction of the road which is expected to be open to the public in December 2021.
The Nairobi Expressway will be a four-lane road and will have electronic toll stations.
President Kenyatta said the two-year road project will create jobs for the people in both Machakos and Nairobi counties. He added that the road is expected to open up Kenyan capital for more business.
The China Road and Bridge Corporation is expected to undertake the construction of the road in 24 months instead of 36 as earlier envisaged.
