Kenya:Senior officers suspended over the Garissa Attack
Seven senior police officers have been suspended in Kenya following an inquiry into the militant attack on Garissa’s university.
Minister for security and internal affairs Interior Jospeh Nkaissery interdicted the officers over the college attack on Tuesday.
He also interdicted two top Garissa administration officers for their failings during the attack on the Garisa University.
Nkaissery suspended Northeastern regional coordinator Ernest Munyi and County commissioner Njenga Miiri “to facilitate independent investigations”.
It comes after reports that police ignored warnings that the campus in the north-eastern town could be raided.
Nkaissery said the suspensions followed a preliminary inquiry by a team from the ministry and the office of the Inspector General on the officers’ conduct and the performance of Northeastern security teams.
“After perusing the reports, I am convinced of the need for thorough investigations into the terrorist attack on Garissa University College to establish possible criminal culpability of individuals officers or relevant security committee,” he said in a statement.
He said an investigating team has been appointed and it will work with the office Director of public prosecution to carry out investigations and take action as soon as possible
He warned all officers in charge of security that they will be held accountable for any acts that endanger the lives of Kenyans
The minister said, further investigations would establish possible criminal culpability of those suspended.
Islamist Al-Shabab fighters killed 148 people most of them University students during the day-long siege earlier this month.
The principal of Garissa University College is reported to have requested in vain for additional security at the campus.
The attack on the university earlier this month was the worst in the country to date by the Somali-based Al-Shabab group.
