Kenya’s opposition leader rejects election re-run date

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga said on Tuesday his coalition would not participate in the re-run of a presidential election proposed for Oct. 17 by the IEBC, unless it is given “legal and constitutional” guarantees, Reuters reports.
“We say there will be no elections on the 17th October, IEBC did not consult with us, they only consulted with Jubilee.” Odinga said while addressing the press in Nairobi.
The opposition leader set conditions for participating in the repeat presidential election. One of the conditions he highlighted is the removal of six officials at the election board.
“We have named the IEBC officials who we want investigated.” Odinga said
He further called for criminal investigations to be opened against the officials in question.
Kenyatta won the August elections by 1.4 million votes, but the Supreme Court on the 8 August invalidated his victory, citing irregularities.
The six-judge bench led by Chief Justice David Maraga, by majority decision, found that the electoral commission failed to conduct the polls according to the Constitution and Elections Act
Some Kenyans have hailed the ruling, a first in Africa, saying it reduces the potential for further violence.
