Kenyan defender Clarke Oduor came off the bench to score in injury time and secure Barnsley a vital 2-1 away win against high-flying Brentford at Griffin Park in London on Wednesday.

Oduor’s winner in the 91st minute meant that Barnsley denied Brentford the chance to be automatically promoted to the Premier League but, more importantly, it kept Barnsley in the Championship for another season.

Barnsley had a daunting task heading into the final game of the season being second-from-bottom and playing away against to a team that had lost just once in eight games.

Barnsley needed to win and hope other results went their way to preserve their status in the second-tier of English football.

They, however, managed to survive Brentford’s pressure and took the lead in the 41st minute through midfielder Callum Styles and went into the break ahead.

Brentford’s pressure eventually paid off in the 73rd minute when they equalized through English midfielder Joshua Da Silva, and it seemed inevitable from there onwards that Brentford would go ahead.

However, Barnsley stole the victory at the death when Oduor turned in Patrick Schmidt’s low cross at the far post for a memorable win.

It was Oduor’s first goal of the season in 35 league appearances which have mostly been as a substitute.

As a result, Barnsley finished 21st with 49 points a place and a point above Charlton, who were relegated along with Wigan and Hull City.
