Kenya:Many fear to report bribery cases
Bribery is not a Kenyan problem but rather a global issue. But a new survey says Kenyan would rather not report a bribery case to the authorities.
Their fear? the consequences and inaction.
These is according to a report released in on Wednesday in Kenya’s capital Nairobi.
The survey conducted by a research institution, Institute of Development Studies, said 70% of Kenyans would rather remain silent on bribery for fear of the consequences of reporting.
64 per cent of Kenyans believe the level of corruption increased in 2014. In 2013, the figure stood at 46 per cent.
Releasing the findings in Nairobi, the institute said corruption is most rampant amongst public officials.
According to the survey, 45 per cent of Kenyans admitted giving kickbacks to politicians in 2014 to acquire services.
Business executives are the most corrupt non-state actors, with 38 per cent of Kenyans saying they bribed them in past year.
Also making to the corruption list are religious leaders at 13 per cent.
