Kenya to prosecute its nationals wanted by ICC
Kenya’s Attorney General says the government wants the three Kenyans wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to be prosecuted locally.
President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday said that his government will not allow any Kenyan to be prosecuted by a foreign court after crimes against humanity charges against him, deputy president William Ruto and four other co-accused were dropped by the Hague based court due to lack of evidence.
President Kenyatta and the others were accused of orchestrating the post-election violence of 2007-2008, in which more than 100 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced.
The ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said that the collapse of the cases was due to threats to witnesses, bribery and lack of co-operation by the Kenyan government.
Attorney General Githu Muigai on Thursday said Kenyan courts can try the three suspects wanted for tampering with witnesses.
