Kenya’s security forces on Thursday night thwarted attempts by suspected Al-Shabaab militants to attack a village in the northeastern region near the border with Somalia, an official statement said on Friday.
In a press statement issued Friday, Kenya’s Interior Ministry said it has thwarted an attack by fighters from militant group al-Shabab on a small village in Garissa County, in the northeast.
Security forces on Thursday evening thwarted an attempted attack at Yumbis village in Ijara, Garissa County by suspected AL Shabaab militia. This is according to a statement by the Ministry of Interior Coordination.
The Ministry said; “The militants was sighted at around 6pm by members of the public who alerted security forces. Security forces swiftly mobilized and engaged the militants in a gun battle.”
However, no casualties were reported.
The Government commended the members of the public for taking pro-active action to report the sighting of the militants.
The government further called on Kenyans to continue collaborating with security agents to ensure that members of militia groups who might have taken refuge among innocent locals are flushed out.
Some reports on Social Media indicated that the militants had hoisted their flag in the area.
