Kenya on Saturday reported 1,395 new Covid-19 cases, its highest single day increase in coronavirus cases since the first case in the country was reported in March.

Of the new cases, 1,337 were Kenyans while the remaining 58 were foreigners.

“Today, 1,395 people have tested positive for the virus, from a sample size of 7,635 tested in the last 24 hours. This brings to 55,192 the number of confirmed positive cases in the country. Our cumulative tests are now 695,087,” the Ministry of Health said.

The capital Nairobi reported the highest number of cases with 569, followed by the counties of Nakuru (149), Kiambu (148) and Mombasa (147).

The death toll continued edging closer towards 1,000 after 15 more fatalities pushed the nationwide death toll to 996.

The ministry also reported 1,087 new recoveries raising the total number to 36,963. 1,019 of the new recoveries were from the home-based care program, while 68 patients were discharged from various hospitals.

Kenya has reported a steady increase in the numbers of new coronavirus cases after the government began a phased reopening of the economy.

Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to follow the health regulations amid reports of violations of measures imposed to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
