Kenya’s Health Ministry on Sunday reported 83 new COVID-19 infections as the East African country continues to see a decline in new cases.

The figure was announced at a media briefing by the Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, who said the positive cases came from a sample size of 3,093.

Kenya now has 35,103 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 597 deaths.

The country reported its first case on 13 March, and registered its highest daily infection figures between July and August.

Kenya is one of eight countries in Africa that have reported more than 30,000 COVID-19 infections.

The country has however recently been seeing a decline in new daily cases, pointing towards progress in its fight against the pandemic.

The recent decreasing numbers have prompted the government to think about further opening up the country, including the education sector that has remained shut since March.

Continentally, Africa had reported 1,291,724 COVID-19 infections and 31,056 deaths by Sunday, 6 September, according to figures from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
