Kenya on Thursday reported 538 new COVID-19 cases raising the nationwide total to 24,411.

The cases were recorded from 6,195 samples tested in the past 24 hours, Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman said. Kenya has so far conducted a total of 335,318 tests.

The capital Nairobi continued leading in the number of new cases and the nation’s overall share of its caseload.

Aman also said that eight more patients had died from the disease raising the nation’s death toll to 399.

“Of these eight patients, six of them had underlying conditions; only two did not have any underlying condition,” Aman said.

The country also reported 514 new recoveries, most of them from the home-based care program, as the total recoveries surpassed the 10,000 mark to stand at 10,444.

Kenya is the worst affected country by the coronavirus in the East African region. The country had initially imposed strict measures to contain the spread of the virus but it has since relaxed some restrictions in an attempt to revive the economy.
