Kenya on Thursday reported 190 new confirmed COVID-19 cases raising the nationwide total to 35,793.

A statement from the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Health Mutahi Kagwe said that the capital Nairobi led with 65 new cases accounting for 34 percent of the total.

Kenya has registered declining numbers of cases in the last few weeks as the government continues with its phased reopening of the economy.

However, the World Health Organisation said Kenya had registered fewer laboratory tests and minimal contact tracing in the weeks in which it had reported a decline in COVID-19 cases.

Health officials have also cautioned against premature celebrations that the country may be past the worst of the pandemic.

According to the statement, 395 more people recovered from the disease with the majority of them (279) being patients who were discharged from various hospitals. The remaining 116 people were patients who had recovered in the home-based care program. A total of 22,442 people have now recovered from the disease in the East African nation.

The nation’s death toll also rose to 616 after four more people succumbed to the disease.
