Kenya on Saturday reported its highest single-day increase in COVID-19 infections as 389 new cases were registered.
The country has now recorded a total of 7,577 confirmed cases from cumulative tests of 185,035 samples.
The figures were issued by the Ministry of Health, which also noted that five more patients had succumbed to the disease, taking the country’s total fatalities to 159.
The East African country has seen a recent spike in daily new COVID-19 infections, even as health experts warn that it hasn’t hit its peak yet.
In a bid to stop further spread of COVID-19, the Kenyan government imposed a nationwide curfew and a partial lockdown in March. While the measures have since been extended continuously, the government eased some of the restrictions in a bid to lowly restart the country’s hurting economy.
The current restrictions are expected to end on 6 July, and the nation is waiting for directions from the presidency on the way forward.
Schools remain closed alongside churches, cinemas and other public gatherings.
Restaurants were allowed to reopen last month but with strict health protocols for all staff and clients.
Beyond Kenya, Africa has reported more than 452,000 COVID-19 infections and over 10,000 deaths, according to Worldometer statistics.
