Kenya’s President is set to get a salary decrement as part of new wage structured released by the country’s pay authority.

The East African country’s Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) on Monday reviewed salaries of various State officers, including the president, his deputy and members of parliament.

In the new structures, the president will earn a monthly gross of about $14,000 (KSh1.4million), down from about $16,500 (Kshs1.6million), the deputy will earn $12,000  down from $14,000 while Cabinet Secretaries will earn $8,000 down from $10,000.

The chairperson of the SRC also revealed that various allowances would be reduced, and that any payments will be guided by the state of the economy.

“We have also reduced allowances and all payments going forward will be guided by state of the economy,” she said

. In his final State of the Nation address in March, President Uhuru Kenyatta hinted at the intention to cut the country’s wage bill after receiving an interim report from SRC. Uhuru said the country could be reaching the ‘point of no return’ as the clamour for higher pay gained momentum in all sectors of the economy.

Governors allowance, deputy governors allowance, reimbursable mileage allowance, sitting allowance for plenary sessions and special responsibility allowance have also been abolished according to the new salary structure.

Abolished benefits in the Senate and National Assembly include; special parliamentary allowance, reimbursable mileage allowance, sitting allowance for plenary sessions and special responsibility allowance.
