Kenya Railways said it will provide discount rates for cargo clients who use the Mombasa-Naivasha Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) freight service.

Kenya Railways said in a notice published in the local dailies on Sunday that the stimuli tariff will be valid until August 30.

According to the notice, the cost of transporting a fully loaded 20-foot container from Mombasa to the Naivasha inland container depot (ICD) will be 51,144 shillings (about 480 U.S. dollars) while freight charges for the reverse direction will be 240 dollars.

Empty containers moved by rail from the Naivasha ICD to Mombasa will attract a levy of 120 dollars, says the notice which has only new prices.

Kenya launched the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR freight service in December 2017 followed by the introduction of double-stack freight trains in September 2018, while the Nairobi-Naivasha freight service was launched in December 2019.
