The governor of Northern Kenya’s Mandera County has claimed security in the region is ‘hopeless’. Ali Roba was talking on Monday following two deadly attacks blamed on Somalia’s Al-Shabaab in three days – one of them on Roba’s convoy.

‘We can no longer stand before the public and assure them that the security is being beefed up,’ he says. ‘Residents will do what they have to do’.

Unions representing doctors, dentists and teachers already have advised their members to leave the area until security improves. In November, Al Shabaab gunmen held up a bus outside Mandera town, separated passengers according to religion and executed 28 people. Ten days later 36 non-local quarry workers were killed in the area.
