Kenya authorities ban night wedding at its coastal town
Kenyan security agents have banned night wedding ceremonies at the coastal town of Mombasa due to increased cases of insecurity.
Wedding organizers have been asked to ensure the weddings end by 10 pm or seek clearance from the security agents and must get police protection, which is paid for according to the Daily Nation.
The decision came after increases attacks on residents by knife wielding gangs.
Some of the residents supported the ban while others opposed the decision claiming that security should be free to allow the celebrations to continue as usual.
The Swahili community in the region hold overnight events, weddings that extend up to five days.
“The government cannot ban night weddings, which are cultural in this region… Instead, security agencies must deal with the gangs. We are in the 21st century and such orders are archaic,” said Commission for Human Rights and Justice executive director Julius Ogogoh
A group of young criminals have been roaming the streets of Mombasa robbing and beating up according to the local media report.
